On Saturday, April 30th, 2017, Logan and I went to the Ellison Onizuka Day Of Exploration STEM Event at the Neal S. Blaisdell Center. Ellison Onizuka was the American astronaut from Kealakekua, Hawaii, who died on January 28th, 1986 on the Space Shuttle Challenger. This STEM event was in honor of Ellison and was put on by the Boy Scouts of Hawaii. This event was a free event starting at 9am and ending at 3pm. Logan and I got there sometime after 9am and we spent the first part of looking around at the different booths and exhibits before settling into the booths or exhibits that Logan wanted to interact with. From body marbling to climate changing sand to driving robots!
The above 4 pictures is of the climate changing sand exhibit.
This booth with this activity with the pig was an actual hit when people visited the booth. The pig looks like it's standing above the hole of the black top. But when you put your hand by the pig, it totally disappeared! And this was all due to reflective mirrors in the bottom of the dish to make the pig look like this! A lot of the kids were in awe with this pig activity and I even saw some adults trying this out!
The Honolulu Fire Department had their own booths and they were letting kids try on their jackets they were on the job! As you can see in the above photo of my son wearing the jacket, it was actually quite heavy!
In the 3 above photos, it's my son driving some robots and actually was enjoying it. My son really seems to enjoy science and I am glad I was able to take him to this event!
Overall, my son and I had a wonderful time at the event from seeing robots to having hands-on booths to everything in between. My son also enjoyed the competition that was being held being the robots and finding a winner after so many matches. I think the winners was a group called "The Dabbing Ducks". Since my son loves science and tech, I would love to take him to more events like this type of event. The plus was that admission was free and all you had to pay for is if you brought food and/or something to drink.
I want to find more events like this that may interest my son. Not only for my son to learn and grow but to have fun as well!
Thank you for reading!
Until the next blog post....
Take care!!!
